Sun nien fai lock (happy new year) and gung hay fat choy (may you prosper),
Having grown up in Victoria with Dad who was born here in 1911 and Mom from Canton, China (1913), the traditions of Chinese New Year was instilled in me and my five siblings at a very young age. The memories of Mom and Dad cooking a whole fish in a large wok (which has now been passed onto my younger brother...who is talented enough to cook delicious Chinese dishes like our parents!) as well as other delicious dishes in several cast iron pots remains in our minds even though our parents have now passed away. Chinese New Year was a very special family time and I am most "honoured" to be able to share what I had been taught to my many, many students. I had been a teacher for forty-three years and had just retired last year. Just this past January I was invited to share my culture in ten classes at two schools. I was amazed at how interested and involved the students were during my hour long presentations. Now I am getting off track.....
This past weekend I had a Chinese New Year dinner party for five and the memories of celebrating in our parents' home and now in my own home with family members and friends would bring a smile to my face! One of the most requested dishes each year is chopped chicken lettuce wrap. I did not take a photo of my husband helping me chop up some of the ingredients or I woking away at the stove, but I did send a photo of one dish on the table. Even if I don't win one of the prizes, I just thought that I would share my story with you and your staff. I have also sent a second photo...not because I had made the chocolate covered fortune cookies...but because it looks like such a bright and lucky photo!
Thank you for having this contest and I do look forward to continuing to come into your shop to find such wonderful kitchen items...Cook Culture is a great place to find gifts for others as well as for myself. I also appreciate the help from your staff.
May this year of the rooster be both lucky and amazing for all those involved with Cook Culture!
#4 Lauren Jung - Winner of a Emile Henry Pizza Stone
It's always a family affair when it comes to food in our house! In these photos, you can see that our mission is to share the love of cooking, with our kids and with the older generation to pass on their recipes and masterful techniques. Here is my daughter learning how to make a chiffon cake, then together we decorated it with whipped cream, Ataulfo mangoes and raspberries. And the other photos are of me learning how to make joong/zongzhi rice wraps for the full moon festivals. I've learned lots of different Chinese dumplings too. My daughter folded these steamed dumplings so perfectly. Enjoy these photos that I am entering in your contest.
Thanks to everyone who played along! We have sent $10 gift cards to you all.
